In episode 26 of “Diary of a CHRO,” João Ricardo speaks with Rogier Van Hamburg, Co-Founder of ImpactWork — a consultancy helping organizations build work environments that are both productive and people-focused. The conversation centers on sustainable HRM, an acronym for Human Relations Management. “We call it Human Relations Management because we don’t want to see employees as resources,” Van Hamburg explains.
It aims to achieve positive economic, social, and environmental outcomes simultaneously, both in the short and the long term. “Sustainable HRM is the strategic evolution of HR,” he adds.

Van Hamburg also discusses ImpactWork’s survey of 188 HR decision-makers, which explores the key challenges and solutions in HRM. He highlights a paradox found in the results: only 40% of respondents consider equal pay an HRM theme, yet 74% say they are satisfied with their progress on it. He warns that this sense of satisfaction could breed complacency — particularly given the upcoming EU Pay Transparency Directive.
